Sight for Kids Wine Tasting and Dinner - March each year

Whittier Host Lions annual fundraiser “Sight for Kids” wine tasting and dinner event was held the first Saturday in March at the Whittier Community Center (corner of Mar Vista and Washington in Whittier). It has become a major event in the life of our club. We appreciate the support from the community and continue to stive to create an event that exceeds expectations. The event raises funds to provide eye care for needy children, and support other community service programs.

Guests are able to sample a wide variety of fine foods from local restaurants and fine wines.
Past events have included entertainment such as a barbershop quartet, raffles, as well as silent and live auctions. Sample auction items have included a Super Bowl XL football autographed by Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Ben Roethlisberger and Bill Cower, a one week stay at a 5 bedroom Big Bear house, a 3 day ocean cruise for two, a roundtrip for two on Southwest Airlines, a guitar autographed by 6 guitar legends including Keith Richards, Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton, a customized backyard play set valued at over $3,000, a gourmet dinner for 8, a dinner party for 50 from Steve’s BBQ, accommodations and golf at Las Vegas and Laughlin, tickets to Lakers, Dodgers, and Angel games, and jewelry from Whittier Jewelry Mart.

Annual All Arabian Horse Show - January each year

For the past 47 years, the Whittier Host Lions Club has held its All Arabian Horse Show. For the past 20 years the home of the show has been the Fairplex Show Ring in Pomona. The show has been held the last weekend in January and has celebrated much success in the past few years. The January dates and location of the 48th Annual Horse Show may be changeddue to construction activity at the Fairplex. This last year there were 294 exhibitors showing 355 horses in 1,480 different show classes. Horse owners expressed their appreciation to our club for our professionalism and courtesy shown to the horse community. Supporting the show is always an outstanding team effort. A highlight of the show every year is the Saturday evening Fiesta Feast dinner. Many club members bring their families and friends and make it a very successful event. The quality of the Championship competition on Saturday evening is always very impressive – the judges are usually very complementary on the quality of the horses and their riders that our show attracts.

All of the Show’s net proceeds are used to support the Whittier Host Lions Club’s work in the Whittier community including providing free eye exams and glasses to needy school children as well as supporting other youth oriented charities in the Whittier area. Organizations that benefit from the Whittier Host Lions include the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts of America, SKILLS Foundation, Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, etc.

The Annual Horse Show has been forced into a one year sebatical because of the pending construction at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds (Fairplex) Equestrian Center in Pomona, California. We will be open again January 28-31, 2010 at the new and improved equestrian center at the Fariplex in Pomona.
